Ghana’s New Curriculum Adds Chinese, French and Arabic - But Only Chinese Makes Any Sense
Ghana’s recent update to the basic school curriculum, which introduces Chinese, French, and Arabic as elective languages, has sparked a necessary conversation about education and economic pragmatism.
While Chinese is a vital skill for future trade with Africa’s largest bilateral partner, the value of French and Arabic should be questioned, especially with shifting global alliances and a declining influence of traditional colonial languages.
Perhaps the real, unanswered question is why our own indigenous languages—and powerful regional connectors like Swahili—are often treated as secondary. If the goal of education reform is truly to prepare the next generation for the realities of global and continental commerce, should we be looking beyond the established global powers to foster deeper, more strategic connections right here at home?
China Backs Burkina Faso’s Agricultural Revolution, Offers Hands-On Training To Youth
In one of its many recent gestures of goodwill to Africa, China has offered hands-on agricultural training to the people of Burkina Faso. The program, held on July 28, ran under the Burkinabé state-organized International Camp for Cultural Exchange, Reforestation, and Community Action, which itself ran from July 24 to August 2.
This development is in keeping with Burkinabé President Captain Ibrahim Traoré’s vision to radically transform his country’s agricultural sector for the benefit of his people.
While the West continues to show only contempt for Burkina Faso and the wider African continent, China continues to stand with Africa on its path to sovereign development.
