In this report for The Spearhead, Okorie Uche sheds light on the infamous “Somalia Affair”, where a group of Canadian soldiers sent by the United Nations in 1992 to “restore order” in a war-torn Somalia, chose instead to turn the city where they made camp into their personal k*lling field.

Niger Signs Agreement to Establish 100,000-barrel-per-day Refinery
On 15 August 2026, Abdourahmane Tchiani’s revolutionary government signed a milestone agreement with Zimar Group to construct a 100,000-barrel-per-day refinery in Dosso.
This is part of the Nigerien government’s efforts to nationalize its resources, breaking the old cycle of exporting raw crude and importing refined products.
The project could allow Niger to capture more value from its hydrocarbon resources, as it is already doing with its other natural resources. It also promises to strengthen its energy security, and create a foundation for greater industrialization within the country and across the Sahelian alliance.
