African Proverb Of The Week
What does this West African proverb tell us?
For decades since supposedly leaving Africa alone, the West has been establishing “bilateral cooperation” agreements with the continent’s “independent” nations.
But what fruit have these “partnerships” borne? A boundlessly wealthy continent where millions remain in multidimensional poverty, where millions of children remain out of school, and where once-peaceful communities are ravaged by terror.
Meanwhile, the people of the West continue to enjoy inflated standards of living, atop their barren soil.
This proverb reminds us, as Africans, to look at the West’s economic gown, look at the rags our own economies wear, and see our relationship with the West for what it really is.
Fun fact: the Fulani people also inhabit parts of the Sahara, Central Africa and Northeast Africa.
ICYMI: Tanzania Eases Visa Process for Nigerian Travellers
Tanzania has officially removed Nigerian citizens from its referred visa category, making travel to the country significantly easier.
Under the updated regulations, Nigerian travelers will no longer require special security clearance before applying for a visa.
While entry remains subject to standard visa procedures and requirements, applications can now be processed online or upon arrival at designated entry points.
The policy shift reflects broader efforts across the continent to ease mobility and boost intra-African trade
‘Africa Doesn’t Have Enough Capital’ Is A Fallacy
In this clip, Citigroup’s Head of Public Sector Banking, Stephanie von Friedeburg contests the widely-held idea that Africa does not have the internal ability to raise sufficient capital for major infrastructure investment.
According to her, the existing model of external financing, which introduces currency risk and slippage into sovereign investment decisions, ends up not suiting the interests of developing countries because the key focus of such financing deals ends up becoming financial engineering, instead of delivering the desired infrastructure value and outcomes.
