Niger and Algeria Strengthen Energy Cooperation, Launch 260 Million-Barrel Oil Project
Niger has moved to strengthen its energy cooperation with North African neighbor Algeria, as the two nations normalize their long-strained diplomatic ties. This cooperation saw the launch of a 260 million-barrel oil project in Niger’s Agadez region on August 13, and the inaugural delivery of jet fuel from Algeria’s state-owned oil company SONATRACH to Niger 2 days later.
Both developments aim to boost the energy wealth of the historically energy-poor Niger.
Tensions between Niger and Algeria rose in April 2025, following the latter’s shooting down of a drone belonging to Niger’s fellow Alliance of Sahel States (AES) member, Mali. Despite Algeria’s long history of solidarity with African liberation movements – including South Africa’s African National Congress (ANC), Mozambique’s FRELIMO party, the African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cabo Verde (PAIGC), and the Black Panther Party – its current leadership, with its “pragmatic” relations with the US and EU, has proven itself to be a pale reflection of that old revolutionary spirit.
But the recent normalization of ties with the sovereign, revolutionary AES spells hope for the future.
